What is twitter for the legal professional?
Twitter is an online social networking and micro-blogging service that enables users to send and read “tweets”, which are text messages limited to 140 characters. Registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Users access Twitter through the website interface, SMS or short message service, or mobile device.
It is best to view it as a micro-blogging service. It is headlines only. When you are viewing a twitter flow, you are really just scanning headlines. Some can be important. Others are much less important.
Twitter is immediate and some what ephemeral. It is the stream of consciousness of the entire twitter universe. It is a stream of headlines which makes it appear that things tweeted does not last long. Though it is hard to find a tweet from a few days ago, tweets are effectively permanent. Search tools can be used to extract them.
Twitter is an asymmetrical system. Anyone can follow anyone or jump in to a specific stream of tweets. Facebook and Linkedin are not asymmetrical. You and I have to be friends before we can see each others information.
**Why the picture of flowing water? Twitter is a constant flow of information and communications.
